In 2021, the municipality of Saint-Sixte appointed our experts for the construction of its new community centre located at 28, rue Principale.
Covering a floor area of 387 m2, the building’s program forms three distinct zones: the lobby and hall, the technical spaces and the library. Whether for public or private use, the multifunctional hall can accommodate up to 97 people and includes a section with a removable stage. The cathedral ceiling adds to the sense of spaciousness. With its numerous windows, the entrance hall welcomes guests by providing a transition between the outdoors and the hall.
The technical areas include a kitchen, a walk-in pantry, an accessible washroom, standard washrooms, a shower area and a storage room. The kitchen is open to the outside and offers a snack-bar area that can be used for sporting or cultural events on the nearby multi-sports fields. The last section of the building features a small library with a separate entrance for extra convenience. As the community hall and library do not have the same opening hours, it was necessary to design them as two separate areas.
Both vertical and horizontal wood cladding in natural tones were used for the envelope, complemented by light grey fibre cement cladding. The anthracite-coloured gable roof with its flat sections is an interesting reminder of the other buildings in the neighbourhood, blending the community centre into the urban fabric. The timber roof truss adds a warm touch to the entrance. For the interior, our team selected neutral finishes with white walls, laminated wood-effect doors and black window and door frames. It was important for our client to offer the community a place to gather, while keeping the design simple and effective.
