As part of this project, Sporthèque retained our architectural and interior design services to fit out its new Espace Hygie training center, located in the heart of Canevas (formerly Place Cartier) in Gatineau. The mandate involved fitting out 1600 m2 of space on a portion of the building’s 3 levels, notably in the former Nautilus Plus and Société de transport de l’Outaouais counter areas. With a mission to combine well-being, innovation and warm spaces, our team worked with the client to create a concept unique in the region, based on a new, modern, upscale and inviting brand image, with many biophilic elements integrated into the décor.

In order to provide a clear understanding of the links between the various activities on offer and to offer users a logical and functional pathway, as well as accessibility to all ground-floor spaces, considerable thought was given to programming. Close coordination with the engineering team was maintained throughout the project, particularly in relation to the more advanced lighting concept required on the 1st floor to compensate for the lack of natural light (and the impossibility of adding windows), and in relation to the additional structural loads imposed on the building for the use of aerial yoga equipment. During construction, we met with the client on a weekly basis on the site, to keep a close eye on things and answer any questions he and his subcontractors might have as the work progressed.

The various spaces include a reception area, a lounge, offices, a pilates room, an aerial yoga room, storage areas, changing rooms with showers, a kitchenette, washrooms, weight training areas, a cardio area, a bio-circuit area, a laundry room, saunas and mechanical rooms. In terms of biophilia, we incorporated several elements echoing nature into the layout, including artificial vegetation, Russian cherry plywood and faux wood, as well as highlighting natural lighting wherever possible.
